One recent Saturday night, more than 50 people packed into a second-floor Dupont Circle yoga studio to hear lawyer-turned-yogi David Newman, a kirtan celeb.

Singer Durga Das performs music known as Kirtan, a form of very old call-and-response devotional music from India. But now, as Kirtan finds its way into American culture, it is evolving in unexpected ways.

Singer-songwriter and sacred chant artist David Newman just released a new single and music video called “Peace and Love” to inspire yogis to get out and vote.

David travels extensively sharing kirtan, devotional music and the spiritual, meditative and musical aspects of Yoga. David’s music embodies a devotional mysticism, distinctive musicality, poetic intimacy and a joyous, often ecstatic quality. 

We sat down recently - over coffee, of course! - with our friend singer-songwriter David Newman. This autumn, we collaborated with David to develop a new Artist Signature Coffee, inspired by his 10th album Love is Awake.

Joining them will be Philadelphia sacred recording artist David Newman, who worked with Kumalo and other "Graceland" musicians on his 2015 album "Love is Awake."
